Letter Paintings

So I showed a few little close ups of a series of Christmas presents I made this year.  I am happy to reveal them as a whole today! These letters can be bought in multiples to spell out a word (home, mom, love, etc) or be purchased separately as an initial.  Although the image will have to be adjusted depending on the shape of the letters, the painting can be the same on different letters than what is shown.  I intend to have them for order up on the etsy shop this week!  Here's to hoping people can actually come across them and that they like them!  

So far, my focus has been birds, but I am working on some other creatures to expand the options.

A Post Christmas Post

After taking time away from the art and computer life to spend Christmas time with my family, I am happy to return!  Christmas time is always my favorite, as it is for many others.  I have out of town family visit each winter, and then my husband and I take an annual trip to Colorado for snowboarding and scenery change.   

Here are some snippits  (and I do mean just snippits) of my side of the family's Christmas.  This year we celebrated on the 23rd and lots of the family got a 24 hour stomach bug.  It was a strange holiday for sure, but I am still to grateful to get the opportunity to see almost the entire gang, including spouses and kiddos.  I look forward to next year to continue traditions of puzzles, board games, blue bell ice cream milkshakes, homemade meals, stockings, and endless laughter!

I am so thankful to God for the incredible friendships I have with my close family.  What a blessing that I take for granted.  I see most of them once or twice a year and we pick up exactly where we left off.  I love them so much!  

I hope everyone had a splendid Christmas and that you are as excited as I am about 2014!

Christmas Card DIY

Everyone loves getting snail mail!  There is just something so special about getting a letter that email, phone calls, or facebook messages just can't begin to compete with. The thing I love the most about them is that they truly represent the person writing the letter. Through handwriting and doodles and even the scratched out errors and wrinkled paper.  I love snail mail!  Send me some now :)

So, Christmas time is the rare occasion in the year where most people send out said snail mail.  We receive lots of Christmas cards and letters from people in our lives who have moved away, filling us in on their endeavors.  Only recently have I sat down and begun making personal cards for my close family & friends (and a few artsy people who would appreciate the effort).  I hope it's a tradition I can continue as we grow our family and priorities change.  Nonetheless, I would like to share with you my Christmas card for this year in a little DIY post.  

Since I was somewhat late on getting these made, I went for a crafty approach rather than getting super artistic.  They turned out really cute and I hope they bring some happiness to those who receive them.  

I scoured the internet looking for ideas on how to do intricate pop up cards, but soon realized that they were lacking a certain "me"-ness.  So instead I did a simple pop up that really anyone who can cut is capable of.

As promised!  Here are some close up views of the little projects that are currently in progress.  They maaaaay or may not be holiday presents so I can't show the full product.  They are acrylic on cardboard.  It's nice to switch it up with various mediums every now and again.  I'll be back to clay after Christmas!

Winter is Coming

Hello. My name is Ashley and I am a blog slacker.  

Sorry for the confession, but boy I really have been so slackin'.  The days and weeks have just gone by so quickly and next thing I knew it'd been like a month since the last post!  le sigh

So I actually had a wild Thanksgiving week.  The weekend before was the TAEA (Tx Art Educators Association) Conference and it was so fun! I got to see some old college (and high school) friends and learn some neat new tricks for art teaching (and art doing).  It was supposed to ice in Dallas, which of course didn't happen, but nonetheless I decided to stay the week and it was fun hanging out back at home.  

The husband and I enjoyed 3 deliciously large thanksgiving meals and lots of chats with family.  We also came home with a fried turkey in freezer bags for future dinners.  If you haven't had fried turkey, then you have never lived!  Do yourself a favor...inject one now...fry it...now!

After returning to ATX, I got straight to Christmas decorating! THE BEST time of year.  Take a little glimpse into our first Christmas in the new home.  

And because I couldn't bear to put away that Pam Garrison felt garland, I've added it to the dining room decor.

And I just noticed the stunning colors of the ripening fruit & peppers from the garden.  Basically, evidence of the last harvest before the next freeze (if we get those in Austin, I don't know exactly).

Heart Bird

I had some time today to work on watercolor paintings.  Made me want to revive my print making schemes.  Anyone have recommendations on how/where to get prints made?  If I'm gonna resell, I don't want them to be super expensive, yet I'm not fully committed to buying a new printer right now.  Research has shown that laser jet is not ideal for art prints, which of course is what we finally got!

Had to snap a shot of Dr. PH martins concentrated watercolor.  The colors are insanely vivid.  I just love to look at that hot pink and orange!

I have my first sub job in the new district tomorrow for middle school English.  Should be interesting I'm sure! Goodnight all.

Craft Weekend

Wow. What a weekend! 4 of my girlfriends drove down to Austin to visit for a couple days filled with crafting and loads of delicious treats.  One of the gals' boyfriend also came and hung out with my husband, so the poor guy wouldn't be stuck in the house with 6 women all weekend long.  (They went shooting at the gun range and ate macaroni covered hot dogs. So manly.)

On Friday night the gals drove into town and Saturday morning we were up and at em brunchin' and  craftin'.  I wish I had taken more pictures, but alas, there was just no time for that between glue gun burns and countless hashtag jokes.  Silly ladies that I wouldn't trade for anything. 

I prepared a trio of crafts

1.   Faux Snow Globe

2.  Holiday (or non holiday) Wreath

3.  Oven Bake Clay Gift Tags.

We've all seen the faux snow globe, and seriously it is unbelievably easy.  You do not have to be crafty at all to complete this one.  My friend was supposed to take step by step pics in true DIY fashion...but I totally forgot about it.  I took it from a pinterest search, so check out THIS blog for a description.  Here are our results!

*Note the one morbid bloody jar. "A Walking Dead" Christmas. Even the people are painted green!

We took a break after this craft to attend a church craft show down the street and then jumped into the felt flower wreath. Also found on pinterest and seen on THIS blog.  This lady said she did it under $6. I'm pretty sure I spent about the same, except I had lots of felt at home, so we added more flowers. If you search pinterest for felt flowers, you can find various ideas to add texture.  Tapping into my art teacher ways, I made little explanation cards for my guests for easy reference.

We opted out of the last craft to spend time with the boys eating pizza and playing blackjack outside. We will save that one for our next craft night. This was such an amazingly lively weekend and I loved hosting my lady friends!  I sent them off with a parting gift house plant, to remind them of all the silliness and laughter we shared on their trip.
